Why Artificial Turf Is Great for Pets

Artificial turf has become incredibly popular with California pet owners, and for good reason. Dogs cannot dig through it, there are no bare patches from heavy paw traffic, no mud gets tracked into the house, and there is no need for toxic pesticides or fertilizers that could harm your animals. In drought-prone California, synthetic turf also eliminates the guilt of watering a natural lawn while your pet destroys it anyway.

Many of our clients at Murphy's Turf installed artificial grass specifically because of their pets. They wanted a clean, durable outdoor space that could withstand daily use from one, two, or even three or more dogs without turning into a dirt pit. And synthetic turf delivers on that promise — as long as you keep up with cleaning.

The Cleaning Challenge with Pets

The reality of dogs on artificial turf is that they produce a lot of waste. An average-sized dog produces about half a pound of feces and a quart of urine per day. Multiply that by multiple dogs and 365 days a year, and you can see how quickly contamination builds up. Unlike natural grass, which has a living soil ecosystem that partially processes organic waste, artificial turf relies entirely on you and your drainage system to manage it.

Pet hair is another factor many homeowners do not anticipate. Dogs that shed heavily leave fur throughout the turf fibers, where it tangles with infill and creates a mat that traps moisture and bacteria. Breeds with undercoats are especially problematic during seasonal shedding periods in spring and fall.

None of these challenges are deal-breakers. Artificial turf remains the best outdoor surface option for most pet owners in California. But understanding the maintenance reality helps you plan accordingly and avoid the unpleasant surprise of discovering your backyard smells terrible after a few months of neglect.

Daily Pet Turf Maintenance

For pet owners, daily turf maintenance is not optional. It is the foundation of a clean, healthy outdoor environment. The good news is that daily tasks take just 5 to 10 minutes:

  • Pick up solid waste immediately. Do not let it sit. The sooner you remove feces, the less bacteria transfer into the infill. Use a pooper scooper or bags.
  • Rinse urine spots. After your dog's last bathroom trip of the day, give pet areas a quick rinse with the garden hose. This dilutes and flushes urine before it concentrates overnight.
  • Check for and remove any foreign objects. Dogs bring sticks, bones, and toys onto the turf that can trap moisture and debris underneath.

Choosing Pet-Safe Cleaning Products

Not all turf cleaning products are safe for pets. Many commercial cleaners contain ingredients that can irritate paw pads, cause digestive issues if ingested, or leave residues that are harmful to animals. Here is what to look for and what to avoid:

  • Safe: Hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners like the one we use at Murphy's Turf. They break down into water and oxygen, leaving zero toxic residue. Enzyme-based cleaners are also generally pet-safe.
  • Avoid: Bleach, ammonia, phenol-based disinfectants, and products containing essential oils like tea tree or eucalyptus, which are toxic to dogs.
  • Check the label: Look for products specifically labeled as safe for use around pets and children. If a product requires a waiting period before pets can return to the treated area, follow it strictly.

Our hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner was specifically developed with pet safety as a primary design requirement. It is the cleaning solution we use for all Murphy's Turf services, and we are confident recommending it because we know it is effective against bacteria while being completely safe for animals once dry.

Creating a Dedicated Pet Zone

One of the most effective strategies for managing pet waste on artificial turf is to train your dogs to use a designated area for bathroom activities. This concentrates contamination in one manageable zone while keeping the rest of your turf cleaner. Here are tips for setting up a pet zone:

  • Choose an area near a water source for easy rinsing access
  • Select a spot with good drainage, ideally on a slight slope
  • Consider installing a separate section of turf with antimicrobial infill specifically for the pet zone
  • Use training treats and consistency to teach dogs to use the designated area
  • Clean the pet zone more frequently than the rest of the turf — daily rinsing at minimum
